Abstract – The Alternative Exhibition
The Southeast Center for Photography (SEC4P) had a recent call for Abstract (photography), juried by Blue Mitchell. The exhibition call was looking for non-representational imagery from found objects in nature, man-made or figurative works, and images that do not attempt to represent external reality, but seek to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and texture.
This on-line exhibition will continue from October 25, 2020 on-ward as a permanent virtual exhibit.

Photomontage: Constructed Reality
Juror: Tom Chambers
Exhibition: October 30 - November 20, 2020
Juror’s Statement
Thank you to all those who took a risk to put themselves out there with their photomontage artwork. I truly appreciate the courage it takes to enter a juried exhibition. As the juror, I was honored to review the many submissions. I always learn and grow as an artist as I study the work of others. This exhibition provided that opportunity, for which I am thankful. I am particularly grateful to the entrants who shared their work during COVID times.
Creating photomontage is much more than a mechanical process. Rather, creating photomontage is expressing a personal vision or story in a unique way. The outcome is often one with an element of surprise, beauty, or unfinished story.
For the first place selection for the Exhibition Gallery, I was drawn to the exquisite image of diaphanous flowers, butterflies, and animals of varying shapes and muted colors, all set against the dark mountainous landscape. This view is a good reminder to look closely at what is underneath our feet, even when the mountains loom above us.

Praxis Gallery
International Juried Photography Exhibition
THE STILL LIFE
Reception: To Be Announced
Exhibition Dates: Aug 22nd - Sept 15th, 2020
Juror | Ann Jastrab
Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer extensive leeway and precise control in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. Still life photography is a demanding genre, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with composition and design skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.
Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that investigates the genre of the Still Life. Art work may explore classical to conceptual aspects of the still life, photographing object arrangements that intrigue, engage or entertain the viewer.

Kudzu Series
Offsetting Kudzu with legendary creatures from mythology, folklore, and fairy tales is a vision
that I am exploring with this new collection of photographs. There are many stories from
diverse cultures that mention the appearance of white animals which are used within my art.
The Celtic people considered them to be messengers from the otherworld. In King Arthur
legends, the white stag, always pursued, but never captured, represents humanity’s quest for
spiritual knowledge, in that case, the search for the Holy Grail.
Native American lore suggests that white animals are a sign of prophecy, a message from
the Great Spirit to be discussed among the tribal elders. The deer, its spreading antlers like
a sunrise, represents both the sun and the Great Spirit, a sense of renewal. The white deer
evokes in me the world of imagination, spirit, and a reminder of that which is not easily seen in
our everyday world.

"TAPPED"
The relationship between artists and their current or former instructors can be a powerful one. Even when this bond is left unstated, we carry our professors' voices forward in time as we mature as artists and people. We eventually realize that the instruction given by our teachers during our relatively brief careers as students continues to expand within us. We realize that the learning they inspired (or insisted upon) is a chain-reaction process that develops across our lifetime. All of us who have been students carry forward our teachers' legacy in one form or another. And those who are, or have been teachers, bear witness to the potency of studenthood.
Most working artists have been a student at some point in time. Most have reached where they are because of this.
Out of respect for this artist-teacher bond, and in honor of instructors working hard to help artists tap into a higher mind relative to art and life, we offer TAPPED every year, an annual exhibit that presents paired works of art by current or former artist/teacher pairs.
