In this edition of FotoNostrum Magazine, we turn our attention to one of the most enduring and multifaceted themes in art and photography: humanity. At the heart of this issue lies a profound exploration of the relationships that shape us—our bonds with one another, the often turbulent connection with our own inner lives, and the deep-rooted ties we hold with the natural world.
The featured artists invite us to consider emotional intimacy through the quiet presence of grief and tenderness, the candid rituals of daily life, and the silent poetry of shared vulnerability. Others guide us toward nature, not only as a subject but as a space of belonging and reflection—where animals, landscapes, and the human spirit coexist in fragile harmony. Throughout, we see how photography becomes a language to process identity, memory, and transformation, illuminating the invisible connections that run through all living things.
This issue also marks the beginning of a new section we are particularly proud of: the FotoNostrum Choice Awards. From this edition forward, we will present a selection of winning and honourably mentioned photos in each magazine—highlighting emerging voices and distinctive visions in contemporary photography.
Kudzu is one of America’s most damaging invasive weeds, covering millions of acres of land in the southern states. For photographer Karey Walter, the plant is a source of fascination that has led her on a surprising an unexpected journey inspired by folklore and mythology.
‘Originally, I was just out photographing the kudzu plant. But I was out hiking one day and by chance I saw an albino deer, which is very unusual in the South.’
Captivated by the legendary nature of the deer, Walter soon found herself compiling a list of animals with similar, elusive folkloric qualities. Captured with a 4x5 camera and ortho film, the resulting images tell a unique story that encompasses a complex, interconnected view of how people, animals and plants all interact in the American South.

ANIMALS is an all-encompassing, interactive exhibition that looks at the animals around us and how human interaction plays a role in endangerment and survival. From domestic household pets to wild invasive or endangered species, animals are presented through various methods, including painting, sculpture, mixed media, and video. This extensively curated collection seeks to unravel the mysteries behind these connections and convey the importance of the role of animals in our environment.
The spectrum of this exhibit also includes how animals have historically been depicted as symbols of prestige and religious icons. They often represent spiritual connection, imprinting into our lives through unspoken communication and connection.
Meaghan Kent, Curator of Exhibitions, and Charles Jackson Adkins Jr., Assistant Curator, curated the exhibition.
Thrilled to announce that my series of work around animals has been selected for the 22nd Julia Margaret Cameron Award. Excited to showcase my art in Barcelona, Spain at FotoNostrum Barcelona this December 2024. Grateful for this incredible opportunity to share my passion with the world.

Touching Magic: Scenes From Enchanted Wilderness, showcases a collection of lyrical photographs that capture mystery and beauty in the setting of Georgia’s coastal wilderness. This exhibition invites viewers into a land of imagination and presents visual narratives that evoke a sense of wonder. Visitors will have the opportunity to escape for a time from the transitory world of material existence, immersing themselves in an untamed land where mystical connections are made and hidden wonders are revealed.
Using varied photographic processes and mediums, the 29 photographers in this exhibition touch the magic and essence of Georgia’s coastal wilderness. This experience is the driving force behind all of the work, which is lyrical rather than documentary. The quality of light, the sea, the moss-craped live oaks and the decaying man-made structures create the atmosphere. Flora, fauna and figures become visual metaphors that speak to the transitory nature of the physical world and the enchantment and power of the natural word.
“In my photographs, I seek to capture fleeting moments that might otherwise go unnoticed or forgotten. By freezing time and preserving it through the medium of film, I create a visual record of the chance occurrences and serendipitous encounters that shape our lives. Through my work, I encourage viewers to reflect on their own experiences of time, chance, and memory and recognize these elements' beauty and complexity. I am particularly drawn to how memory shapes our perception of time. Memories are malleable and subject to interpretation, yet they can shape our present and future selves.”
